An almost intact Roman theatre
The Roman Theatre of Orange is one of the few in Europe to keep its great stage wall, thirty-seven metres high. Louis XIV called it the finest wall in his kingdom. Settling in there one summer evening, under the Provençal stars, to listen to an opera or a concert, is an experience that stays with you. The Chorégies d’Orange, one of France’s oldest festivals, make the greatest lyric voices shine there.
Arch, Saint-Eutrope Hill and old town
At the northern entrance of the town, the Roman Triumphal Arch keeps its bas-reliefs of battles and Gaulish prisoners. Above the theatre, Saint-Eutrope Hill offers a viewpoint over the pink roofs and Mont Ventoux. In the old town, Place aux Herbes and Notre-Dame Cathedral gather terraces, cafés and small shops. A date in Orange is easy to build, from monument to terrace.
Around Orange, wine and Provence
A few kilometres away, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards roll out their rounded pebbles under a cloudless sky. Further on, Vaison-la-Romaine, Beaumes-de-Venise and Mont Ventoux complete the Provençal picture. On Lyad, Orange members share their favourite cellars and restaurants; it is up to you to find someone to open a bottle and stretch the evening, glass in hand.
